1 John 4:16

Z Saves the Day

So, we've been doing quite a bit of entertaining over these past few weeks... results? We're pretty exhausted. Add to that the fact that due to Z's HORRIBLE cold and cough neither of us managed to get many hours of sleep in last week.

That's all the preface for what's coming. Yesterday, we were preparing for dinner together with friends. Things were going very well. Zeno had just decided to jump out and take advantage of the gym, I was finishing up the Fennel soup and then going to take a quick cat-nap. All that was left was to puree the soup, so that's what I was doing, when, ThWap-SPlosh-FlWinG! It managed to EXPLODE EVERYWHERE!!!! At which, I burst into tears... Partly because it startled me to death, partly because it was HOT and splattered on my arm a bit, but mostly because I was tired and I immediately knew my chance to take a nap was gone...

Anyways, I went to Zeno for help because, as you can see, I was bit overwhelmed, and my marvelous Amore, gave me a big hug, grabbed the mop and a sponge and set right to work. He licked up that disaster in no time - walls, counter, floor, toaster, power converter, blender, etc and in the end I was able to grab that cat-nap and he made it to the gym!

So, though the walls came out clean, the dirty dishes stacked up high (also because, due to an infected finger I was forbidden from cleaning the dishes for a week!) and we didn't manage to wash them before dinner. They were our task today - Z conquered the mountain of dishes while I "took down Christmas".

Cleaning up Christmas

Today we finally had a free afternoon home and while Zeno worked on other projects… details forthcoming in another post, I managed to clean up all of our Christmas decorations!!!! So, since I didn’t get them on the blog before, here’s what I was cleaning up:

Now I'm ready, ready, ready for Spring!!! Bring on the colors, the warm weather and the fresh inspiration of feeling everything around you becoming new!

Snowborading Bombardino

Monday was a holiday and we had the chance to go skiing for the first time this year!!! Actually, it was Zeno on skis and I was on a board. The snow was so fun, and we had great rentals so it was FANTASTIC! I felt like I must be a blur as I flew down the mountain – such exhilaration!!!!

At the end of the day, you know, when your muscles are all sore (at least ours were since we haven’t been hitting the gym and it was our first time on the mountain), we stopped together with the rest of our group and had a special Mountain drink to warm us up. I’d set my eyes on it the year before and asked Z,
“What is that!?!?? It looks fantastic – like warm custard in a cup topped with a tremendous dollop of whipped cream. YUM!”

I ended up putting off the experience until now because I was told it was a mountain drink intended to warm you up – because it’s hot and has a bit of Rum. I felt I wanted to ‘earn’ it first. Well, Monday I felt I’d earned it I was so pleased with our day on the snow and it was all that was expected: yummy, warm, and powerful. Perfect end to a great day of boarding.

So here we are in 2010

One might protest that you can’t force two opposite things to mix… not so! Sometimes, the most opposite and un-combinable of things become the most wonderful! For example, oil and vinegar – put them together in a bottle and they won’t combine together for anything unless you continuously and vigorously shake them up. And yet, these two simple, yet irreconcilable substances become one of the most perfect salad dressings you can hope to find!
Another example, the letter ‘A’ is on the extreme opposite end of the alphabet from the letter ‘Z’.  ‘A’ has it’s own characteristics and unique traits that ‘Z’ will never, ever possess (and vice versa) unless it becomes another letter altogether. Under the tragic instance that ‘A’ or ‘Z’ should become another letter they might be drawn closer together in the alphabet, but language as we know it would cease to exist and we’d end up in a very dismal place… Yet, from a different perspective, these two opposite letters are actually closer to each other than they ever could wish to be! Simply wrap the alphabet around and they align side by side.

Perhaps you can tell I haven’t had much sleep this week :) Or perhaps it’s a bit overwhelming for me to return to our blog and realize that since last February such an exorbitant amount of life has taken place that I have no idea how to jump back in! So, I’m not going to try just now, suffice to say that A&Z are back on the blog and life has brought us further along and closer together than ever.

Looking forward to continuing the journey with you!

Grandma-Next-Door

This, our first blog of 2009 - can you believe it!?!?! I want to dedicate to my Grandma-Next-Door who died this past February leaving behind her a legacy of love. Grandma became Grandma-Next-Door because since the day I was born until I moved to Italy she's always lived right next door! She generously poured her life into mine and my family and will always be treasured in our hearts.

A letter to Grandma-Next-Door:

Dear Grandma-Next-Door,

I miss you very much. Today, I must admit, was a very hard day; a sad day; to have the reality sink in that I won’t be able to hug you again… but then, in the middle of my grief, I realized that you wouldn’t like it at all to see me in such a sad state! So, I began doing some of the things I know would make you happy; the things we would have done together had you been here.

First, Zeno and I picked out some flowers. Beautiful, vibrant in color, perfumed, and alive – just like you! Then, I made myself a cup of tea. Oh, Grandma! Do you remember our first tea-parties? You conversed with my dolls and stuffed animals as if they were the grandest ladies of the land. We would put on our imitation “proper British accents” and point our pinkies while we sipped our tea (my tea started out looking suspiciously like Ovaltine until I turned about eight-years-old and then I had a little tea with my milk).

After that, a little pampering – Zeno and I went to the gym. That’s not very much like me! You’re thinking, ah, but here’s the catch: we completely skipped all the work-out areas and headed directly to the sauna/relax area. Ahhhhhh… I could feel your smile of approval as the stresses of the day melted from our shoulders. Relax, calm… Just like our Grandma-Granddaughter shopping trips, the criteria for a good purchase were these three simple things: softness, beauty and scent. And I learned those criteria well didn’t I? There came a point, once I’d grown up a bit, that you had to begin censoring the fine tuned tastes you’d helped me acquire because I developed the uncanny knack for walking directly to the most expensive item in the shop!

Grandma, you spoiled me rotten… and the marvelous thing is that I think you enjoyed it almost more than me! But your generosity went much deeper than a lovely new skirt – you loved me inside-out, upside-down and backwards. I remember when I was a little girl, I was sick a lot and had to have a few surgeries. Crazy as it sounds, I sometimes looked forward to those sick days because I knew Grandma would be coming to me as soon as she could to bring treats and little play things, to read me stories and tell about your life’s adventures. I specifically remember when I was just able to begin eating again after one of my mouth surgeries you brought me a French-baguette. Probably due to you, I was fascinated with Europe and so you brought me a real French-baguette, my first one ever, and told me about some of your travels in France. That was wonderful. Though, you knew well, that my greatest fascination was with Venice, Italy.

The city that floated on the water and was the birthplace of the first completely female orchestra as well as one of my favorite composers: Vivaldi. In 2005, when I finally had the chance to visit Italy, to visit Venice, you were the inspiration of my delight. And, when I fell in love with my Amore – my marvelous Zeno, you were the most delighted of all! You happily took all the blame, along with Grandpa, for being the author of a friendship that led to my discovering God’s precious and perfect gift of love to me in my Amore Zeno. And in the love that Zeno and I share I rejoice every day. Now, when I miss you, I have only to hug my Amore and know that you are alive in the love that we are living.

I will remember for my whole life some of the last words you spoke to me. I’d come into the room where you were resting, looking lovely and calm, gracious and beautiful even in the face of death. I sat on the edge of your bed and you woke up a bit. You reached out for my hands and took them between yours and said with tears in your eyes,
“Zeno loves you so very much doesn’t he?”
“Yes,” I said nodding and leaning closer because your voice was weak and quiet, just a whisper, “Yes, he does Grandma”.
“And you love him so, so, sooo very much don’t you?”
“Oh Grandma, I do, I love him so very, very much” I replied.
You squeezed my hands and rested comfortably back against your pillows smiling. “I’m happy”, you said, “I’m happy. That’s all I need to know.” And you held my hands as you closed your eyes to rest again.

That’s all I need to know too Grandma. That the love God has given us conquers even death. And it does. And that’s all I need to know. And I’m so inexplicably blessed to share that love with you. Thank you for inspiring my life with the beauty, passion, and love of your own. I miss you Grandma, but you’re not truly gone, you’re here in my heart still. I love you Grandma.

Yours forever, ‘Manda

Christmas is a comin'!!!

We would like you to meet Boudin, our Belgian Christmas tree that we got from Ikea this year! Why did we name it Boudin (pronounced: Boo-dahn)? Well, it's rather a complicated connection, but when Zeno was in the army there was a song about no more Boudin for the Belgians... Boudin is actually a type of sausage, but that wasn't the connection for us, rather, it was the fact that since Boudin is in our living room in Italy, it's no longer for the Belgians.... So, now that that's all crystal clear! Introducing: Boudin!

Yes, we're the ones who decorated and trimmed him so very nicely and festively!

There are some very special and wonderful ornaments on Boudin. For example, we have:

The Christmas Fish!!!

The Grape Cluster is an ornament no Italian
Christmas tree should be without!

The Crystal star is truly beautiful.

Going right along with the Grape Cluster,
apparently the wine flask is a necessary ornament!

Here is our city-scape scene of Indiana!!!

We need to make sure our internationality is properly
displayed with a bit of the good old USA!

This is our Christmas Raccoon! We think he's afraid of heights...

Our Christmas butterflies!!! Symbolizing the new and beautiful life that came when Jesus was born.

Here is our Christmas Frog. He says:
you make my heart leap!!!!

And last, but certainly not least,
is our Christmas puzzle ball!
We put it together on the flight
to the US last Christmas ( =

Merry Christmas!!!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

Buon Giorno di Ringraziamento!!!!

In preparation we did a little bit of decorating:

And God gave us a dusting of snow!!! ... though, by the time we had the celebration, it had turned to rain and been washed away. But it was beautiful and fun while it lasted!!!

Of course we prepared a LOT of food!!!

(We can testify to the A LOT part since now, we've been having leftovers for about a week! It's a good thing all the food was good!)

This year we doubled in size:

Angie and Giuliano with their girls Bea and Cate; Giovanni and Rachel with their little baby girl (who has yet to make her appearance); Joe and Laurie with their little Amelia; Paolo and Luiza with their new little 3-mos old Elia; Natalie and her girls Kennedy and Giada (Joe had to work), and then, of course, A&Z!

Thanks to Dad we had the annual Thanksgiving Quiz! It was a tough one this year... Here are Angie and Cate working together on the quiz ( =

Time to carve the Turkey!
Here's Zeno (holding the knife of course!), Joe (the one who knew what he was doing) and Giovanni (spectating and giving moral support).

The carving drew a few spectators!

Here's the girls' table:

Rachel and Natalie... eating!!! or, at least, preparing to ( =

And then, there was the cleanup afterwards.... actually, thanks to paper plates it wasn't that bad! But we were both ready to kick up our feet and take a good rest after all the festivities.

What a GREAT time!!! I think we're going to make it a tradition... now, let's see, how can we fit everyone in next year....? and next year, we'll have the photographer going around a bit more to make sure to take more pictures of everyone during the party! We missed a few this year.

Happy 2nd Anniversary!!!

For our second anniversary we took a long weekend in the mountains of Valle Aurina - beautiful, peaceful, refreshing, clear, lovely, exciting... perfect!

I love you!!!!
